Sacred Sound
For the past several years, I've been trying to understand the key factors of what makes certain sounds and musics "sacred."
This has involved ethnomusicology with Buddhist monks in Japan, learning the written music of Gregorian and Byzantine Chant, and studying contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt who try to channel the divine in their simple melodies.
Eventually I'd like to compose music in this broad world tradition, but study is turning up a lot in the meantime.
